Exploring the World Through Debate: Model United Nations

25th April 2025

At St Margaret’s, we are proud to offer Model United Nations (MUN) as part of our enrichment and co-curricular programme — an inspiring opportunity that brings global diplomacy to life for our pupils.

What is Model United Nations?

MUN is an educational simulation that mirrors the real-world workings of the United Nations. Students, known as delegates, take on the roles of representatives from different countries and come together to debate pressing global issues. From climate change to international security, human rights to economic development, MUN challenges students to think critically, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively in pursuit of practical solutions. This culminates in the much anticipated annual MUN conference — a chance to meet and engage with peers from other schools, participate in large-scale debates, and put their skills into practice.

Far more than just a debating society, MUN is an immersive experience that helps students build essential life skills beyond the classroom. As Mr Jones, our Head of History and MUN lead, explains:

“MUN is not just about arguing your side of the coin — it's about looking at the other side of the coin as well, and understanding what that country's position is, and how you can negotiate in order to come to a reasonable and rational solution”

These experiences encourage our students to see the world from new perspectives, challenging their assumptions and broadening their horizons. Tatiana, one of our MUN pupils, puts it powerfully:

‘I feel like MUN helps us to engage in global issues from different points of different countries, to fully understand their issues and therefore expand {our} knowledge.’

Skills for Today — and Tomorrow

One of the most significant benefits of participating in MUN is the development of core transferable skills that serve students well in their academic and professional lives. From public speaking and research to negotiation and teamwork, MUN provides a platform for personal growth.

‘Definitely my public speaking has improved,’ says Simran. ‘While I speak in lessons, it's so nice to go up and speak in front of a class and debate about something that you're passionate about.’

Tatiana agrees, adding that MUN has expanded her critical thinking while also offering a clearer picture of potential career paths:

‘Before joining MUN, I did not have a full overview of what politics might include… MUN has definitely put me into the environment that I may be working in if I choose the path of politics.’

Simran adds that MUN has aligned perfectly with her academic interests:

“I was attracted to MUN because I do subjects that link a lot to global politics — such as geography, obviously politics, and business studies. And I've always wanted to work for the United Nations”

Whether you're passionate about politics, curious about global affairs, or simply looking to improve your confidence and communication skills, Model United Nations at St Margaret’s is an exceptional opportunity to step into the shoes of a diplomat and see the world from a whole new angle.

For those considering joining, the advice from our experienced MUN-ers is clear: be brave and jump in.

Speak. You're not gonna learn anything if you don't speak up. And while MUN is all about well-structured debates, it's also about learning,’ encourages Simran.

Mr Jones echoes the sentiment:

“Come along, get involved, have fruitful debate, and learn something new”
