Science Month at St Margaret's

11th April 2023

Science Month at St Margaret's gave pupils an opportunity, not just to research, investigate and engage in STEM, but under the ‘connections’ theme of British Science Week (March 10-19), there was a chance to celebrate and explore how science connects and shapes so many of their experiences and passions.

Over the course of the month pupils spent time reading scientific books, conducting home experiments, giving class presentations and attending talks, including Mars Day.

And as British Science Week began, each day started with a chapel assembly to discuss how science could shape our future and the potential accuracy of predictions made by science fiction. The week was jam-packed with organised events and opportunities for pupils to engage both collaboratively and independently. From a scientific scavenger hunt, searching for answers both online and around the school, to hypothesising on the number of rice grains, water molecules and radioactive nuclei in different objects for a guessing challenge, there was only just time left to express their creative sides on the science jokes wall. Sharing his experience of designing equipment used in ESA’s 2022 JUICE mission to Jupiter, we were in for a treat when we welcomed Richard Baughan, a space engineer from Imperial College, London, into school for a lunchtime talk.

Next came the STEM Fair, with pupils from Years 6 - 13 completing science projects ranging from animal communication to the internal workings of combustion engines, volcanoes to potato batteries, and artificial intelligence to the DNA of a strawberry.

And finally, the whole school Science Awards Ceremony, where the winners of previous events, and those pupils who engaged most in all that was on offer, were recognised for their efforts.
