St Margarets School Pupil learning to ride bike with Balanceability

Ride your bike like a pro!

27th April 2021

As the Covid restrictions lifted, we started to reflect on the impact COVID-19 may have had on the children’s physical development. We knew we wanted to give children an opportunity to develop their gross motor skills, enjoy being outside and most importantly have fun.

With all this in mind we are holding weekly Balanceability sessions for three Junior School groups. Reception, Year 1 and an Afterschool Club activity open to Year 2 to Year 4 children who want to perfect their bike riding skills ready for the summer holidays.

Reception enjoyed their first session and are very much looking forward to each Thursday afternoon continuing their Level 1 Balanceability course.

Reception’s course is designed to increase confidence, safety and balance. The fun sessions develop skills in gliding, braking, steering and controlling speed when on a bike. Everybody had so much fun, it was lovely to see the joy on everyone’s faces.

“It was so much fun with my friends on the bikes. We had to go round the cones and then keep a bean bag on our heads. Mine didn’t fall off a single time. I can’t wait to do it again”

Year 1 enjoyed their Level 2 course. They also had great fun, balancing, steering and gliding across the playground!

These sessions will help all the children to ride their pedal bike independently and without the use of stabilisers, as well as bring lots of laughter and smiles!

Thursday afternoon concluded with the Learn to Ride club for pupils in Year 2 to Year 4. The children used their own bikes and the balance bikes to build their confidence and had a great time challenging themselves!
