Meet Ife: The Entrepreneur Converting Plastic Waste into Household Items...
28th October 2022
We are always interested in hearing what our alumnae are up to, so we try to drop in on them from time to time.
This week we caught up with young entrepreneur, Ife Somefun, who boarded at St Margaret’s from 2010-2015 and studied Maths, French and Art A-Level before heading off to university to study architecture. Since then, Ife has been keeping herself busy with her eco-business venture, Fantastic Plastic Studio, and she now spends her days converting plastic waste into household items. What started out as a university project in 2019, has now evolved into a full-time business.
Fantastic Plastic Studio creates products made entirely from recycled plastic waste and Ife is keen to promote a circular and zero-waste lifestyle in line with this, telling us that the idea for her business was born out of the need for change regarding excessive plastic production and pollution.
“Globally, we produce over 380 million tons of plastic and generate 300 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, this is equivalent to the weight of the entire human population”
Ife has launched her business in London and Nigeria, but production is at a local and domestic scale at the moment. She creates her products, the main line being a range of durable, waterproof coasters in varying colours, by recycling discarded LDPE plastic bags into homeware. Her signature marble patterns are achieved through layering, and the application of heat and pressure to create the desired effect.
In a short time, Ife’s business has sold over 150 coasters from the first collection ‘Bloom’, which completely sold out. In the future she hopes to expand her product range further with tiles and larger scale homeware such as tables and chairs.
Congratulations on your success Ife, we are really excited to see where this journey takes you next!
