Year 6 Rocket Car Challenge
28th March 2023
Recently Year 6 pupils have been working on an extraordinary challenge. Using scientific knowledge and engineering skills, they have set out to build a rocket car that can reach speeds of up to 50 mph.
Their mission is not just about creating a fast and powerful vehicle, but also about learning how to work together effectively and developing skills that will be useful in the workplace and beyond.
Inspired by the Bloodhound Project, (a high-speed vehicle designed to break the land speed record) pupils are using their understanding of forces and motion, applying maths and science, gathering and recording data for analysis, using tools and crafting to bring their ideas to life, reading engineering drawings and understanding limits and safety.
Through this process, they are gaining an awareness of STEM roles and careers, and realising that their passion for science and engineering can take them far. They are learning the importance of planning and organising, communicating effectively, listening actively, managing their time efficiently, and working as a team. They are negotiating and delegating tasks, constantly pushing themselves and each other to excel.
“As they build their rocket car, they are discovering the thrill of discovery and the joy of working together towards a common goal”
