Chinese New Year 2023
1st February 2023
Welcome to to the Year of the Rabbit! If you missed our celebrations on Sunday, here is just a little taste of all that was going on.
The Chinese New Year Fireworks Spectacular, organised by the Friends of St Margaret's, has become a popular annual event in the school calendar. Weeks of planning by the FoSM committee culminated in an afternoon of festivities for over 500 visitors. A special mention and thanks to the boarders, who under the guidance of staff, organised stalls promoting Chinese culture and games themed around the celebrations. Other entertainment included a yangqin performance, a traditional lion dance by the Imperial College Lion Dance Team, a mask changing act, magic show and stilt walker.
The catering team didn’t disappoint and delivered a delicious Chinese themed build a bowl meal, and the evening ended with one of the best firework displays we have seen for a while!
FoSM aims to create opportunities for parents and children to come together for social events whilst connecting parents across the St Margaret’s community. Funds raised are donated back to the School for various initiatives, and currently funds are being raised for the equipment needed to run a new Stargazing Club. To date, money raised by FoSM has been used to purchase:
• A semi-industrial sewing machine
• Water polo goals
• Learning support training for a therapeutic programme
• STEM robots for the Junior School
FoSM have created a network of Class Reps who provide a vital link between FoSM and the parent community. Regular events every half term are held to meet with Reps to discuss ideas for future events. The FoSM committee are also always keen for new members to come on board and help plan events; no particular skills other than enthusiasm and time are needed! We also know that in our parent community there are a wide range of skills that would benefit our events as well as opportunities for businesses to provide sponsorship/services.
If you would like to find out more about getting involved in some way, becoming a rep, joining FoSM, or have a business that could support us, please do be in touch via fosm@stmargarets-school.org.uk
We look forward to seeing you at our future events!
